On March 15, Brenda's mom passed away from cancer. It happened sooner than expected. She made a profession of faith last summer. We already had tickets purchased for Brenda to fly to Minnesota on March 21. Our daughter Amanda was already staying with her to help take care of her. I have been delaying this letter to be able to make a couple of announcements. However, things did not work out quite as hoped. For over 10 years we have been involved in a project to make a new translation of the Bible in Korean language. There are several versions that have been done in the past. Recently, Eum Songmin and his wife Yoe Jiyoun visited us. They were elementary students when we helped Songmin's father establish the Seoul First Baptist Church in 1999. I had the privilege to conduct their wedding in 2016. Today they live in Virginia with their two beautiful daughters. Songmin works for the U.S. Department of Defense. Let me share with you an event which took place in Korea many years ago. In 1866, the US flagged schooner General Sherman steamed up a river to Pyongyang. Aboard the ship as translator was 27-year-old Welsh missionary Robert J. Thomas. He had been working among Chinese sailors in Shanghai. While there, he met three Korean sailors who had converted to Catholicism, and from them he learned to speak some Korean. May I share a few notes of praise with you? In late December, Brenda, Amanda, and Matthew finally received visas! We have been praying and working toward that since they arrived back in Seoul in August. It was not really in doubt that they would receive visas since they were only applying for dependent status under my visa which is good until March 2022. What a year! In June, I returned to Seoul after a year of furlough. It was wonderful visiting many of the faithful churches that have partnered with us through the years as we have tried to reach Korean people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to establish independent Baptist churches. On January 17, I returned to Seoul to oversee our church's move to a different location. It is quite an undertaking to move a church! It was a blessing to see how hard our leadership and members worked in preparation of that move while I was away! Praise God the move went very smoothly. In February, I made another trip to the Philippines to speak in a few churches that I wasn't able to visit when Brenda and I went there in December. The day after I arrived, I was invited to preach to around 800 police officers and recruits with our missionary Pastor Roland Vicente. Brother Vicente is a retired Brig. General in the Philippine National Police. God worked in a mighty way during that service.
