Let me share with you an event which took place in Korea many years ago. In 1866, the US flagged schooner General Sherman steamed up a river to Pyongyang. Aboard the ship as translator was 27-year-old Welsh missionary Robert J. Thomas. He had been working among Chinese sailors in Shanghai. While there, he met three Korean sailors who had converted to Catholicism, and from them he learned to speak some Korean.
