Seven Commands
Teach them
- Deuteronomy 6:4-7
- Teach: “to ‘whet’ or ‘sharpen,’ by means of intensity and repetition.”
Aim them

- The word “man” in this passage references, in particular, a man-of-war.
Chasten them
- Proverbs 13:24
- Chasten: “to correct, restrain, bind, or reduce to obedience.”
Train them
- Proverbs 22:6
- Train: “first instruction or direction.”
Do not provoke them
- Ephesians 6:4-5
- Wrath (in particular), along with other works of the flesh (as listed in Galatians 5), is a great enemy that every parent must battle in the rearing of children.
Bring them up

- Nurture: “instruction by action and example; showing; demonstrating.”
- Admonition–“instruction by word of encouragement, when appropriate, and by a word of reproof, as required.”
Raise them heartily
- Colossians 3:23
- Heartily: “out of the soul.”
- Verse 17 and verse 23 form a potent“first word and last word” on the issue of life’s relationships.
