The craving of the Jews for a visible head was a revolt against the sovereignty of God. They became enamored with the pomp and glory of surrounding kings and nations. God never intended His people to be the subjects of an earthly ruler, but a “kingdom of priests” and “a holy nation” with Himself as their King. (consider Exodus 19, 1 Samuel 8)
