Characteristics of an unruly/foolish young person
- Does not listen to reproof; is stubborn and rebellious. (Proverbs 13:1b; Deuteronomy 21:18)
- Disobeys and rejects discipline (Proverbs 15:32; 15:5, Deuteronomy 21:18; Romans 1:30; II Timothy 3:2)
- Speaks with disrespect and swears at parents. (Proverbs 20:20; 30:11,17; Mark 7:10)
- Slanders his parents (Proverbs 19:26)
- Steals from and takes advantage of his parents. (Proverbs 28:24; Deuteronomy 21:20b)
- May fatally strike parents or betray them (Exodus 21:15; Mark 13:12; Mark 7:10; Proverbs 20:20)
- Arrogantly rejects authority and despises elders. (Isaiah 3:5; Proverbs 23:22)
- Is foolish and lacks understanding (Proverbs 10:1; 22:15; 7:7)
Characteristics of a disciplined/wise young person
- The Lord is with him (I Samuel 3:19; Proverbs 15:32b)
- Pleases God (Colossians 3:20b)
- Brings his parents joy and gladness (Proverbs 10:1; 27:11; 23:15,16,24; 29:17b)
- is respected as an example by others (I Timothy 4:12)
- Serves God with the best days of his life (Ecclesiastes 12:1)
- By God's choosing, a wise child comes to understand and receive salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (II Timothy 3:15)
- Has a successful, long life (Ephesians 6:3; Deuteronomy 5:16)
