All that glitters is not gold

  • Bible verse– “stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. But he knoweth not that the dead are there” (Proverbs 9:17-18)
  • Bible story– The account of Samson in Judges 13-16
  • Truth illustrated– Cotton candy or the five cent hamburger may not really be that great after all.  Children are valuable and should not be dealt with or live on a whim.

Life will frequently seem to be unfair

  • Bible verse– “...Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me” (John 21:21-22).
  • Bible story– The account of Paul's thorn in the flesh in 2 Corinthians 12:1-10
  • Truth illustrated– We need to remember what we really deserve.

The parable of the ox and the flamingo

  • Bible verse– “Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox” (Proverbs 14:4) [crib = feeding trough or stall]
  • Bible story–The account of Hezekiah in 2 Kings 20:12-19
  • Truth illustrated– Boys should be strong and able to work, but also learn to keep themselves submitted and directed as a yoke of oxen is, Christ being the example. (Philippians 2:5-8)

When faced with any situation, eliminate the option of whining

  • Bible verse– “Do all things without murmurings and disputings” (Philippians 2:14).
  • Bible account– The account of the “wanderings” (Exodus 12; Deuteronomy 34)

Nothing just happens

  • Bible verse– “Fear not: for am I in the place of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:19-20).
  • Bible account– The account of Joseph in Genesis 37-50
  • Truth illustrated– One generation's problems may be just what God is going to use in the next for His glory.

It takes time to build something worthwhile

  • Bible verse– “Till we all come in ... the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13).
  • Bible account– The account of the growth of the church of Philippi in Acts 16

Discern the difference between flattery and genuine encouragement

  • Bible verse –“... a flattering mouth worketh ruin” (Proverbs 26:28).
  • Bible account –The account of Barnabas and Saul in Acts 9:1-31

There are talkers and there are doers

  • Bible verse– “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22).
  • Bible account– The account of the Parable of the Two Sons in Matthew 21:28-32

There is activity and there is accomplishment, and they are not the same thing

  • Bible verse– “Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34).
  • Bible account– The account of slothful/diligent men in Proverbs 12:27
  • Truth illustrated– Idea, Planning, Execution, Reward

A good friend fears and follows God

  • Bible verse –“I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts” (Psalms 119:63).
  • Bible account –The account of Amnon and Jonadabin 2 Samuel 13
