Are You Displeasing God?
Part 2 - PM Service
“Who would have thought to find adultery in David and drunkenness in Noah and cursing in Job? If God leaves a man to himself, how suddenly and scandalously may sin break forth in the holiest man on the earth! I say unto all, “Watch!” A wandering heart needs a watchful eye.” – Thomas Watson
The contributors to sin
- The lifting up of pride 2 Samuel 11:1
Oh, be careful of the awful sin of pride.
Scriptural references on pride: Deut. 8:11-14; Deut. 8:17-20; Ps. 52:7; Ps. 73:6-9; Prov. 6:16-17; Prov. 8:13; Prov. 16:5; Prov. 16:18-19; Prov. 17:19; Prov. 18:11-12; Prov. 20:6; Prov. 21:4; Isaiah 14:12-16; Ez. 28:2-9; Ez. 28:17; Daniel 4:37; Matt. 23:6-7; Rom. 1:29-30; 1Cor. 10:12; 1Cor. 13:4; Php. 2:1-10; 2Tim. 3:1-4; Rev. 3:17-18
- A lax of duty 2 Samuel 11:1
The war with Ammon was not over. It was customary in middle eastern culture during this time in history that kingdoms would call a “cease-fire” during the winter months. It seems that there had been a pause in war and now that springtime was upon them again, the war was going to resume. For reasons untold, David stayed in Jerusalem rather than lead his forces into battle. It would prove to be one of the contributing factors to his undoing.
- A choice of immodesty 2 Samuel 11:2
- A lingering vision 2 Samuel 11:2
- A disregard for God’s laws 2 Samuel 11:3-4
The covering of sin
- A false pretense of friendship 2 Samuel 11:7
- A choice of convenience over principle 2 Samuel 11:8-9
- An attempt to have others join in sin 2 Samuel 11:11-13
- A cruel plot of murder 2 Samuel 11:14-20
“Sin frequently comes as a bare suggestion, or an imagination; an airy thing, spun of such stuff as dreams are made of. You do not think of it pleasantly and view it as a thing bright and lustrous to the imagination. The thought fascinates, and then the spell of evil begins its deadly work. The thought condenses into desire and desire grows into purpose and purpose ripens into act. So slyly doth sin come in the soul, that it is there before we are aware of it.” – C. H. Spurgeon
The consequences of sin
- Testimony 2 Samuel 12:13-14
- Death 2 Samuel 12:15-23
- Rebellion in the House, 2 Samuel 13-15
- The story of Amnon, 2 Samuel 13
- The life of Absalom, 2 Samuel 14-15
- Displeasing of God, 2 Samuel 11:27
How much do you fear allowing sin in to your heart and life?
“Abide in Jesus. Let the Holy Ghost in you keep you abiding in Jesus, so that when Satan comes to knock at your door, Jesus will go and open it, and as soon as the devil sees the face of Christ looking through the door, he will turn tail…” – F. B. Meyer
