Bible Text: Jude 9 |

Series:

If you have your Bibles, please turn in them to Jude verse 9.  I want to preach this morning on the power of the Devil.  It’s going to offend some of you, and it’s going to make some of you angry.  That’s okay; I’m still going to preach on the Devil.  I’m going to preach on Satan, Lucifer, Son of the Morning.  He’s your enemy and he’s mine.  And we ought to know everything we ought to about him.  If you know the history of warfare, you know that great generals like General MacArthur or Patton or Jackson won very decisive battles for one reason, and that was they knew their enemy.  They studied their enemy in depth and they knew what they were going to do.  But, we Christians think that the best thing to do is to be dumb about ours.  We don’t want to think about Satan; we don’t even want to hear preachers preach on Satan, but I’m going to preach on the most powerful enemy anyone can have.  He’s no joke; he’s no boogieman.  He’s a real person; a person to be reckoned with in your life and mine.  Now Jude verse 9 reads, Yet Michael the archangel when contending with the Devil, he disputed about the body of Moses durst not bring against him a railing accusation but said, The Lord rebuke thee.  Again, Michael the archangel said, “I can’t win a conflict with you, but I know somebody that can, and that’s my Lord.  I’m going to ask the Lord to rebuke you.”  Now some here live like they’re a match for the Devil.  I say some, many.  You play footsy with him, but if Michael knew better, we better learn because if you haven’t already been torn up by Satan, you will be.  So, let’s pray, if you’ll pray with me, that the Devil will be defeated this morning.

One of the verses in the Bible that really shows the power of Satan in a very vivid way is I Timothy 5:15.  It simply says, For some are already turned aside after Satan…  Now you might say, “Why is that so important?”  Because this was about 65 A. D. when that verse was written, and again it said, …for some are already turned aside after Satan…  Paul was still preaching.  The Apostle Peter, the Apostle John were still preaching.  Christianity was still under the aura of Pentecostal Power.  The Bible was still being inspired, miracles were being worked, and yet in this apostolic era of great power Paul said that some were already turned aside to Satan.  And my point, to begin with, is that if this was true in those great days of power, can you imagine how many are torn up in the day that we live in?  How much more we should fear this today.  Listen to some of the reasons given in the Bible for Christians who turned away during that time.  We read where Demus turned aside to Satan because we read in II Timothy 4:10 where Paul says, Demus hath forsaken me having loved this present world.  Now I have more time to think about this, but can you imagine being the Apostle Paul’s assistant and seeing the miracles and seeing the great works that were accomplished and, in that type of an environment, Demus forsakes Paul having loved the world.  Now it doesn’t say what part of the world, it doesn’t say.  Maybe it was music, maybe it was elicit sex, maybe it was the bright lights or drink, or money, or possessions.  We see this often in our young people.  It doesn’t matter how much they’re warned.  Now I’m not talking about young people who were raised in a good home.  It does matter, but I’m saying when a home is weak, and there’s not a unity in the home with the church and so forth.  We see they hit a certain age, and they run off.  Our bus kids that ride the bus and seem to love the Lord and do what’s right, they hit a certain age, and I’m not saying all, but so many ruin their lives with premarital sex.  Ananias and Saphirra turned to Satan because of their hunger for spiritual attention.  Pride.  One day they came to Peter and said, like Barnabas, we’ve sold our land, and, like Barnabas, we’re going to give all the money and all the proceeds to the Lord.  What they were saying is, “We want to look spiritual, we want recognition.”  Listen, they were like so many today.  For some reason, now listen to me, there’s many today who do not want to do right, and by that, see God bless them.  Let me go back again.  They will not do right, and by that, see God bless them.  But on the other hand, they want to be thought of as being spiritual, and they get mad if they’re not thought of as being spiritual.  Well, I’ll tell you what Ananias and Sapphira were thought of as—they got carried out by the undertaker.  That’s what God thought of them.  John Mark turned aside on that missionary journey while Paul was preaching in power and seeing God’s work accomplished.  John Mark said, “I’ve got to go home to Mama.”  Now, you might say, “What are you trying to get at?”  This is the day of the Apostle Paul and Peter and John.  This is the day the Bible was being written, and yet these people turned their backs on God.  Many want to be in full-time service for the wrong reasons.  They think it’s full of honor and glory, but in reality, from a human standpoint, full-time Christian service is full of rejection and hurt.  That’s what it’s full of, and John Mark said, “I’m not taking it; I’m leaving.”  In I Corinthians 5 there is an unnamed man who turned aside to Satan because of elicit sex.  I’ll not go into it, but it was a terrible sexual sin, and it almost destroyed the church at Corinth.  The Apostle Paul came and turned him over to the devil for the destruction of the flesh.  And as we read the Bible, you see every sin in the book to turn Christians aside to Satan.  Let me ask you, do you think you could be turned aside?  Well, if you contemplate it, I’ll guarantee you, you will be.  But even if you’ll say, “No, I couldn’t do that,” you better watch yourself.  You better not minimize it.  Do you think you could ever morally collapse to the place where you’ll turn away from God to Satan?  When we hear, all the time, of Christians falling, we hear of teens; that’s why churches are changing today.  Churches are changing, Bible colleges are changing; when I say changing, I mean changing.  Changing their standards because people are falling, and they’re trying to lower the standards to allow them to make, but that doesn’t work.  But it’s not just teens, it’s those in their twenties, and not just young adults, it’s adults, and even preachers.  Now, I ask you again, Will you fall?  Will you slide here and there?  Will you let the old boob tube get into your mind and poison your mind?  You ladies that work, I never allowed my girls to work a secular job, and once we were married, I certainly wouldn’t allowed my wife to work a secular job.  The number one reason is you get poisoned on the job.  You’re in the middle of all that trash and all that filth and all the rest of that.  Are you going to let that destroy you?  Get dull?  Start robbing God?  I think it’s something we should make ourselves meditate on, I really do.  It doesn’t do us good to just forget it and push it out of our head.  I don’t think there’s anything in America more important than our churches falling and Christians falling.  For the last twenty years, Bible-believing churches have been hurt because pastors, big names, have turned aside in doctrine and morals.  Deacons letting the Devil win the battle, young people always trying to get others to follow them into sin.  Adults attacking the church they once loved because their marriage failed or their kids fell.  There’s nothing in Fundamentalism hurting more than people falling to Satan.  Now you can read a psychology book and say it’s this or that.  If you read your Bible, it’s Satan.  He’s the one tearing your marriage up.  He’s the one in your mind ripping and putting all those wrong thoughts in your mind about your mate.  He’s the one who tries to get you not to do, as the testimony mentioned, spank your kids in a consistent way.  There’s nothing that’s destroying what we believe more than Satan in this area, and I pray that through your prayer and through your Bible study and preaching and just standing right with God, and soulwinning and tithing that you’ll never, ever throw your hat in the ring with Satan.

Now I want to learn a little more about our enemy, the Devil, this morning.  He is real.  You say, “I know he’s real.”  Then why don’t you treat him like he’s real?  He’s real, he’s just as real as you are.  He’s just as real as God the Father, and he could be planning to throw his darts at me as I preach even in the pulpit this morning.  But let’s learn, first of all, that the Devil, even though he’s real, he’s not eternal.  He’s not always existed.  There was a time when there was no Devil.  There are only three eternal ones, and of course, that’s the trinity.  God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.  They’re the only ones who have no beginning and no end.  The Bible, just in Genesis, says, “In the beginning God…”  And in Deuteronomy 33 it talks about the eternal God.  In John 10:30 Jesus says, “I and my Father are one.”  So Jesus is eternal.  And then Hebrews 9:14 it calls the Holy Spirit the eternal spirit.  All three persons of the Godhead are eternal but Satan did not exist eternally.  He’s a creature who was created at one point in time.  According to Ezekiel chapter 38, he was created as an angel.  So, of course, that means he was created with the rest of the angels.  So he does not have eternal powers, but he’s old.  That’s the point I want to make.  And that ought to scare you.  Age is indicative of cunning.  Age is indicative of being wise.  If I were able to choose an enemy, if I had my choice, I’d get the youngest one, not the old one.  These young people think they are something, but I would get the youngest one.  But the Devil has age and experience.  According to Job 38, the sons of God, speaking of the angels, shouted for joy before the foundations of the world.  He was there before the world was ever created.  He’s not eternal, but he’s old and he’s wise.  If you have any sense, you’ll learn by yours and other’s experience.  You gain things with age, and he’s been around for thousands of years.  He was behind Adam and Eve’s fall, and you play footsie with him?  He was behind King David’s sin.  He was behind the Roman wickedness and the Hitlers and the Mussolinis and the Lenins, and we could go on.  He’s been behind all the filth since the world existed.  Satan is behind the Hugh Hefners today.  He’s behind the drug kingpins of our day, and you think you’re a match.  Do you understand what I’m saying?  You say, “Are you trying to scare me?”  I’m trying, but I don’t get through to too many.  I’m trying, but most people think they’re too strong.  They’re too good.

But next he’s powerful by virtue of his position.  When God created the angels, He created them in ranks.  There were seraphims and cherubims, and God made him a general.  He’s also powerful because of his discipline.  Before he fell the Bible says he was perfect in all his ways.  Angels were created with the will to love the Lord or attack the Lord, rebel against the Lord.  And even with the will, he was perfect for all these years.  Now what I’m saying, is, don’t treat him like a boogieman.  Don’t treat him like mythology.  He’s also shown powerful by what he tried to do.  Nobody else in the history of the universe would ever try to overthrow God and destroy Heaven and become the boss of the Universe.  Can you imagine the gall and the brass that it took to aspire to rule the Universe?  He’s not eternal, but he’s very powerful, and it’s going to take the most powerful angel that there is to put him down in the bottomless pit, and he’s going to fight all the way.  And it will take an eternal chain that we could never forge to keep him there.  Satan is powerful, that’s the point I want to get across.  He’s powerful, but he’s not all powerful.  When we use the word omnipotence, what do we mean?  When we speak of God as being omnipotent, we’re speaking of His attribute that make Him all powerful.  Now there are a few things He has built into his nature that He cannot do.  He cannot look on sin.  If you remember in the Bible when Jesus was crucified, God turned His back.  You say, “Why would He turn His back on His own Son?”  Because our sins were on His Son, and He can’t look on sin.  Also, He cannot deny His Word.  He’s magnified this book above His name, and He put in His nature to yield to the Bible.  But in almost things, He’s all-powerful.  Turn with me to the book of John, chapter 12, verse 31.  Look at Him stand on the bough of that ship.  There’s a terrible storm and the wind is blowing, and it’s raining, and the waves are horrible, and He says, “Peace, be still,” and the water becomes flat and calm.  Look at Him stand outside that grave and shout, “Lazarus, come forth…” and Lazarus came jumping out all wrapped up in grave clothes.  He’s mightier than death; He’s mightier than the wind and water—they all obey Him.  He is omnipotent.  Satan is very powerful, but he is not omnipotent.  In John 12, verse 31, Jesus says, “Now is the judgment of this world now shall the prince of this world be cast out.”  Now the thing I want you to notice here is, he’s called the Prince.  I’m trying to give you a balance here.  He’s not all-powerful, he’s not as powerful as God, but man, he’s got power that scares me.  Sometime in eternity past, God gave Lucifer, the son of the morning, responsibility for caring for his creation.  In Ephesians 2:2 he’s called “the prince of the power of the air.”  Listen to me, you wonder what’s happening in this world?  In John 14, verse 30, he’s called the prince of this world.  That’s who you’re dealing with.  That’s who’s trying to destroy you.  You want to look at the world?  You want to look at America, and ask what in the world is going on?  He is the prince of the world.  He is who we’re battling.  That’s why we have to take strong stands.  In II Corinthians 4:4, he’s called the god of this world.  Did you hear me?  Some people have this confused.  Satan is the god of this world.  You say, “Why is there so much wickedness?  Why are you always preaching on sin?”  Because people are falling to the god of this world.  They are accepting the god of this world.  In Matthew 4, when Jesus was tempted by the Devil, the devil had the power to offer Him the world.  Are you listening?  This ought to scare you to death.  It scares me to death.  And by being the prince, he’s the ruler of the vast kingdom of fallen angels, and in Ephesians 6, they’re called the rulers of darkness.  That’s who we’re up against.  That’s why I preach hard.  That’s why we take hard stands.  That’s why we think you ought not to have television in your house.  Now you people think I’m crazy.  Ozzie and Harriett isn’t on anymore; it’s demonism, that’s what on there.  It’s nudity.  It’s raw sex.  It’s homosexuality.  Come on!  I defy you.  Have me over to your house.  We’ll sit down and watch it a while.  We need to take a stand.  Again, they are called the rulers of darkness, and some ask, “Do you believe in the conspiracy theory?”  Yes, to some extent.  But, I whole-heartedly believe the Devil has a conspiracy to rule the world, and he uses his demons and his fiends that control sin in high places.  Now you say, “Where did Castro come from?”  The Devil.  Now, some of you younger people, we’re trying to have relations now with Cuba.  Do you realize that man, this is just the one thing that sticks out in my mind, how at one time there was a nice sized Baptist church.  His soldiers came, pulled them all out of the church, lined them up, and machine-gunned them down.  That’s that nice old man.  Isn’t it something that these radicals always hate Christianity more than anything else?  The Muslims, the radical Muslims, they hate Christianity more than anything else.  Look at Hitler.  He was no accident.  Lenin was no accident.  Sadam Hussein just machine-gunned people down by the hundreds and hundreds and bulldozed them into a hole.  It was no accident.  They’re of Satan.  They’re given over to Satan, and I’ll tell you what, I’ve heard that plenty of these types admit it and talk about it.  I’m talking about demon-possessed rulers that hate God that would destroy Christianity and all that we stand for in a second.  There’s a war in America and that war is between the principles of the old puritans that founded this nation and the demon-possessed leaders on the other side.  Look at II Corinthians 11.  He’s in control of all false religions and cults.  Do you believe that?  Do you believe Mormonism is an accident?  Now, again, we’ve got visitors in here.  You’re never supposed to say anything, man, you’re not supposed to say anything against any religion.  The guy that was running for president was an old Baptist preacher, and they got on him because they said he believed that there’s only one way to Heaven.  Well, then he believed the Bible.  The Bible says Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”  There is only one way.  Like it, or lump it.  Listen to the Devil if you want to listen to the Devil.  There’s only one way, and the Jehovah Witnesses—they’re no accident.  You say, “Do you hate them?”  No, I don’t hate them.  I’m sure I’d like some of them, but their religion is of the Devil.  In II Corinthians chapter 11, starting with verse 13, “For such are false prophets,” now you listen to this.  Listen closely; read it.  “For such are false prophets, deceitful workers…”  What are the doing?  “…transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.”  The Devil’s workers looking like the apostles of Christ.  What?  “…and no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness whose end shall be according to their works.”  Liberal preachers and priests, why not become a part?  Why don’t you go have breakfast?  I’m going to preach what I believe.  They’re devil preachers, that’s why.  You say, “How can you say that?”  Because they’re sending people to Hell.  Go burn a candle.  Go cross yourself; you’ll go to Heaven.  No, you’ll go to Hell.  There’s a conspiracy, and the Devil is winning.  He’s working his conspiracy.  He has the power to destroy churches, do you know that?  I’ve watched him destroy churches.  In Matthew 13, he’s given the ability to sow tears among the wheat.  What does that mean?  If you read the context, what it means is, that the Devil puts people in our church that will say, “I don’t like this kind of preaching; I’m going to quit.  I’m going to stop putting my money in the offering plate.  I don’t like this kind of preaching.”  You better stop.  The Devil puts people in our church.  “Boy, he preaches too hard on the family.  He shouldn’t preach train up a child in the way he should go.  That’s his opinion.”  No, I quoted the Bible.  He sows tears among the wheat, and so now preachers will say, “It’s okay to be an adulterer and stay in the pulpit.  It’s okay.”  You’d be shocked to hear the things that are preached now and believed even in people’s churches that would be considered independent Baptists.  “It’s okay.  Be adulterers.  Just hide it.”  We’re so old fashioned, sometimes, people think.  Man, you embarrass people whose kids have not lived for God.  I don’t want to embarrass anybody, but if you’re right with God and you lost your kids, you’ll want me to preach harder than ever.  In II Corinthians 4:4 he’s called the god of this world.  He is the god of this world.  Now get it.  Did you forget that we’re in a war?  You think we can be backslidden and raise our children for God?  No.  Something tells us we can get on that internet and watch filth and still have a decent marriage, still raise our children, still have God’s blessing.  No.  The Devil has won.  The Devil sows tears among the wheat.  Preachers to change beliefs, Christians to smirk and question.  Man, you get some friend of yours that smirks and questions, I wouldn’t have him as a friend.  Revelation 12 says he is the accuser of the brethren.  Do you get all that?  All this is Bible.  He is the accuser of the brethren.  “Did you see that?  Why do you think they do that?  Don’t you think they’re a little hard there?  Don’t you think they’re a little extreme?  Man, I pay money to put my kid in that school, they can’t say that to me.  That youth pastor, he can’t do that.”  Night and day, the Bible says, he goes as he did in the day of Job, and he accuses Roger Voegtlin and he accuses Jeff, and he excuses Dan Armacost, he accuses, he accuses the deacons.  “They’re not worth a dime.”  If God would permit him, he’d take your life and mine.  If you’re worth anything; some of you he wouldn’t take.  We’ve got to stop underestimating Satan.  We need to look around and if we really look around with the idea that there is a Satan, and he’s winning the battle, it’ll scare you to death.  He’s not omnitient, but I Peter 5:8 says, ”…he walketh about seeking whom he may devour.”  He’s not everywhere, but he has millions of fiends working over the world to get us.  Michael said, “I won’t touch you.  I’m scared of you.”  Michael was one of his peers, and he says I’ll give you to God because even though I’m a high-ranking angel, I’m scared.  And we think we can play footsie.  We can rob God; we can cut corners.  Listen, we need to give him to God and keep our life right recognizing that greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world.  We’re no match.  Look around.  Look at how he spread the filthy rock, so called, music.  Now I know some people in here, you listen to it.  This was once a Christian-dominated country.  People always talk about, “No, our forefathers said ‘Separation of Church and State’.”  Get this and get it straight.  Yes, they wanted separation of church and state.  They didn’t want any church to rule the state like the Church of England did.  But they didn’t want to separate from God.  How can you read any old history and say that?  These people loved God and wanted to build the country on the principles of God and the Bible.  You say, “That’s wrong.”  No, it’s right.  I’ll give you a million dollars if you can prove me wrong.  Why don’t you give me a million if I can prove you wrong?  But just the music—I’ll just touch on some areas of entertainment.  Look in their eyes; they’re demon possessed.  I’m not saying every musician, no, I’m not saying that, but I’m saying many of these people will say it with their mouth.  They’re demon possessed.  The drugs—all this is what kills them so early.  They’re Sodomites.  This is a well-controlled systematic organization headed by the Devil and his imps.  Now I’m going to stir the pot some more.  I don’t know the latest names.  I don’t follow the stuff.  But look at Michael Jackson.  I know he’s hollow because he’s from Gary, but listen to me.  He had that Never Never Land and he’d bring little boys in there to sleep with.  There’s no doubt about that.  Did anything ever happen to him?  No.  Look at Madonna.  “Oh,” you say, “Madonna, she’s a great singer.”  She’s a freak.  Now you say, “You’re just hateful.”  She does perverted things on the stage—perverted.  You say, “I’ll never come back.”  Well, I’m getting you while you’re here.  Rosemary Barr, she said this.  She thinks of killing her parents.  She sleeps with women.  She seriously considers suicide everyday.  I would too.  One in seven teens have tried suicide.  One in seven.  One half of all teen girls have thought about killing themselves.  When I was growing up, only five percent of American births were to unmarried women.  In 1970, when we started this church, it was ten percent; now it’s at least forty percent, and that’s with abortion!  During the past years, the years of our church, violent crime has gone up five hundred sixty percent, and we can just go on, teen suicide has multiplied, juvenile crime has just about quatripled.  You can’t deny it; it’s all around us.  Bang, bang for no reason.  The family, the family—I wasn’t born into a Christian home, but I had a father who loved his wife.  He went to work and provided for us.  And I had a mother who loved her husband and they both loved the kids.  Understand?  They didn’t drink and they didn’t smoke, let alone take drugs.  On and on; what happens today?  You talk about bang, bang; drugs are provided in the home.  There are a lot of so-called lawmakers who want to make it legal so we can tax it.  Booze provided in many homes.  Elicit sex?  “Just don’t get pregnant.”  What a home.  I would never say that American was a Christian nation, but it was based on Christianity, and like my family, it was no different than the people who lived next door to us, that was an American family.  I’m not saying nobody drank or smoked, but what I’m trying to say is that they loved their wives, they were faithful to their wives and husbands, they loved their kids and raised them for God.  Now what?  In America, I heard somebody say today, France laughs at us.  We ought to be laughing at France.  We’re trying to be like the rest of the world, and we are now.  What happens today?  There are so many times now that mothers, I don’t know how that can be, just kill their little babies, kill them.  I think it comes from abortion, the lack of, you know, if they kill them in abortion, why not kill them when they’re one or two years old?  And then little kids are killing their parents.  Little kids kill their grandparents and grandparents killing theirs.  Burn the house down.  You can’t deny it.  The so-called Ozzie and Harriett American home where there was a loving mother and father and children in a unit and they loved one another and cared for one another are killing one another today!  They don’t care for one another.  They’re doing drugs together.  I read a while back about two thugs that jumped a mother and her nine-month-old baby and raped both of them.  If that doesn’t make you sick, something is wrong with you.  And tell me there’s not a devil, and tell me he’s not winning.  Go back and look at our government leaders.  Where has Satan taken this country?  The Puritans, again, came to worship God.  I don’t care how they want to make George Washington look, he loved God and he read the Bible.  He prayed.  I could go on and on.  Congress didn’t have some stupid poem for prayers, they got on their knees and they prayed for God’s blessing on the country.  Now we make it a federal law just to protest against abortions.  Now, you know what the things is now, and I’m not kidding we need to meet and talk about this, the homosexuals are coming into churches like this and taking them over.  When I say taking them over, just perverts.  Lesbians screaming, “We want your girls.”  Ripping at the buildings, and the police do nothing.  How has that happened?  How is it now, you young people, you don’t know how things have moved in my lifetime—from a godly home where preachers were revered, now they’re scoffed at.  How did that happen?  The Devil and his imps are winning the war.  Marx was of the Devil, Lenin was of the Devil, Hitler was of the Devil,…what makes you think our own leaders cannot be?  We have an administration now, I don’t care what they say, they hate everything about God.  Everything.  They attack and are destroying this one God-fearing country stood for.  And I say again, it used to be, you say, “You’re talking about the President of the United States.”  Yes.  And it used to be when preachers preached the President listened.  Today, they scoff at preachers.  They scoff at God.  They use it, oh yes, of course, “God Bless America.”  Do you know, I think it was Time Magazine, one of the major magazines, the cover was America Is Now Socialist this week, and it is.  That’s a liberal dancing up and down, it was written by the grandson of the man who ran as the Socialist president back years and years ago, but now triumphantly, America Is Now Socialist.  That quick, twelve days.  The Devil has this country.  The Devil has defeated the majority of preachers and churches, and he wants you.  That’s the point of the message.  He wants you.  Well you say, “I pray.”  [tape turned over; lost some]

… if we don’t realize we’re in a battle and really get mad.
