The transition from childhood to adulthood can be quite challenging.There is often tension between young adults and their parents.The young adult thinks he knows more than he does, and parents can think that their children don’t know as much as they do.There can be many misunderstandings between young adults and parents, most of which result from a lack of understanding each other’s roles.

Young Adults

  • Dangers
    • Thinking you know more than you do (Proverbs 4:1-4)
    • Think you are right when you are wrong (Proverbs 14:12)
    • Forgetting the dangers of being a young adult (2 Timothy 2:22)
    • Desiring your own way (Proverbs 18:2, 1 Timothy 4:12)
    • Going your own way (Proverbs 1:10, Proverbs19:27,Luke 22:4)
    • Wanting your parents to accept your way over God's way (Proverbs 23:15, Proverbs 27:11)
  • Duties
    • Remember that your parents will always be parents (Proverbs 1:7-9, Proverbs 2:1)
    • Trust your parents (Proverbs 23:26-28, Proverbs 2:12-18)
    • Honor your parents
    • Seek the advise of your parents(Proverbs 4:10, 4:20, 5:1)
    • Remember what you have been taught (Proverbs 3:1, 6:20, 7:1)

Parents

  • Dangers
    • Forgetting that your authority has ended
    • Failing to establish boundaries
    • Taking a hands-off approach
    • Being more critical than constructive (Proverbs 14:1, Hebrews 3:13)
    • Losing your temper (Proverbs 15:18, Proverbs 29:22)
    • Holding grudges (1 Peter4:8)
  • Duties
    • Show respect (Proverbs 23:26)
    • Correct carefully (Proverbs 16:21)
    • Remind your children of lessons you have taught them(Proverbs 3:1, Proverbs 6:20)
    • Offer advise (Proverbs 4:20, Proverbs 5:14)
    • Listen and learn (James 1:19, Proverbs 18:13, Proverbs 18:13)
    • Be a sounding board
    • Compliment your children and acknowledge their accomplishments(Proverbs 23:15)
    • Build a strong relationship with your child’s spouse
    • Commit them to God (Acts 20:32)
    • Enjoy your children (Proverbs 29:17)
