Different types of preaching are needed Expository preaching- Give the meaning of the text in its context Historical Character studies The Word discovered Discover where the thought begins and ends Pray for Holy Spirit illumination Read and re-read the text (meditation) Look at paragraph divisions (Acts 21:40-22:1) Discover the outline (Psalm 1:1-6) The Word divided - There is only one primary interpretation to a passage Ask yourself questions as you read Who, why, recipients, etc. Define important words and clauses Find the historical setting Read commentaries The Word delivered Declare the truth Explain the truth Illustrate the truth (don't overload with stories and cross-references) Make the personal application Introduction (where you are going) and Conclusion (sum, invitation)
