Bible Text: Psalm 80 |

Our national hymn recognizes God as the God of America.

Our fathers, God to thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing:
Long may our land be bright
With freedom’s holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God, our King.

I. A plea to the Shepherd of our soul

  • A humble plea – “give ear”
  • An honorable position – “Shepherd of Israel”
  • A holy place – “between the cherubim”

II. A cry of despair over God’s anger

  • God’s judgment is sure - Psalm 80:4-7
  • God’s protection is significant - Psalm 80:8-12

III. A plea for restoration from the Lord of Hosts

  • A comprehension of God’s might - Psalm 80:14-16
  • A commitment of loyalty - Psalm 80:18
  • A confidence in God’s power - Psalm 80:18-19

“Unless the Spirit of God be upon us, we have no might from within and no means from without to rely upon. Wait upon the Lord, beloved, and seek strength from Him alone. There cannot come out of you what has not been put into you. You must receive and then give out.” - C. H. Spurgeon
